THE SETTING

Kastos is one of the smallest inhabited islands of the Ionian, lying between Kalamos and the mainland. Its single village wraps around a sheltered harbour of stone houses, fishing boats and visiting yachts.

From Paleros
Kastos lies around 15 nautical miles from Paleros across the calm inner Ionian. The crossing is part of the day, with views of Kalamos and the mainland mountains along the way.
By local boat
By car, drive south down the coast to Mytikas (~30 mins from Paleros) and catch the daily local no car ferry across to Kastos. Ferry schedules can vary depending on the season.
Combining islands
Kastos pairs naturally with Kalamos for a full day on the water: a morning swim in a quiet bay, lunch in Kastos harbour and an unhurried return in the late afternoon light.

What to expect
Swimming. The water around Kastos is exceptionally clear, with quiet coves along the coastline that are best reached by boat.
Lunch by the harbour. The waterfront tavernas are the heart of the island, ideal for a long, relaxed lunch before heading back.
Island landmarks. Just above the harbour, a restored stone windmill now serves drinks with a view (Mylos), while the 19th-century church of Agios Ioannis Prodromos remains the island’s quiet historic centrepiece.
Bring with you. Water, shade, sun protection and some cash, as a small island keeps things simple.
