THE SETTING

Green hills, blue water.

Kalamos rises steeply from the sea opposite the mainland, dominated by the dramatic central ridge of Mount Vouni (reaching nearly 750 metres), with dense pine forests running down toward the water. The main village and harbour sit on the eastern side, with stone houses climbing the hillside above the waterfront.

Away from the harbour, the coastline breaks into quiet bays and pebble beaches where the water turns a vivid turquoise. It is an island for swimming, slow lunches and the unspoilt charm of the Ionian.

GETTING THERE

A day by boat

From Paleros

Kalamos lies around 12 nautical miles from Paleros across the calm inner Ionian, with the island’s green mountain rising ahead as you cross.

By local boat

By car, drive south down the coast to Mytikas (~30 mins from Paleros) and catch the local ferry across to Kalamos. Ferry schedules can vary depending on the season.

Combining islands

Kalamos pairs naturally with neighbouring Kastos for a full day on the water: a morning swim in a quiet Kalamos bay, then lunch by the harbour on either island.

LOCAL TIPS

What to expect

Porto Leone. An abandoned settlement on the southern coast, left deserted after the 1953 Ionian earthquake damaged its water supply. Its sheltered bay and historic stone church, still preserved and active, make for a memorable stop by boat.

Kalamos Town & Episkopi.  The main harbour on the east side of the island is a quiet port with waterfront tavernas, fresh fish and stone-paved lanes, livelier only in the summer when sailing flotillas pass through. To the north, tiny Episkopi sits peacefully among olive groves and has a lovely little local taverna.

Swimming. Secluded, emerald-clear bays framed by pine trees, perfect for dropping anchor for an afternoon swim.

Bring with you. Water, shade, sun protection and some cash, as island life keeps things delightfully simple.
